The use of latent heat properties of melting ice for cooling means that the coolant (i.e. ice water) temperature is highly consistent, even with fluctuating thermal loads. This inherent stability greatly reduces process variability, meaning that ice builders are the preferred choice in a variety of process industries where temperature stability is critical.

An ice builder is a process cooling system consisting of an ice reserve submerged in an insulated tank of chilled water. The chilled water is routed to where cooling is required (plate heat exchangers, jacketed vessels etc.)

There is a huge range of potential applications for this system, from fermentation vessels in breweries to heat exchangers in bakeries and farms.

Kilkenny Ice Builders are ideal for pairing with renewable energy sources such as Solar PV, because they operate just like a battery. Ice is built when electricity is cheap and used whenever it’s needed.

Cooling using ice water has a number of very distinct advantages:

Ice Builder Construction

Made from food-quality 304 18-8 grade stainless steel for guaranteed resistance to corrosion
Sealed outer double walled cavity is pressure filled with expanded polyurethane for greater stability and superior insulation.
Serpentine-wound coils made from refrigeration duty 20 gauge copper tube provide a large heat transfer surface for the ice bank.
All models are fitted with an air pump/agitator. This guarantees complete agitation of the water bath and an even ‘melt off’ of the ice bank.
Low-pressure air is mixed with the return water from the plate heat exchanger. This water/air mix is distributed through perforated pipes located on the bottom of the water bath.
